Travelling Riverside Blues

Kansas City
Poster Design
2020

Kansas City is home to many things, from its historic jazz & blues roots to world famous barbecue, and yes, even its views. As I have always been familiar with the city's cultural allure, it wasn't until recent that it began to take notice from the rest of the outside world. The city was growing, and coincidentally, I was moving to Colorado at this time, but before I left I wanted to celebrate the only city I had ever called home and bring a piece of it with me. I created an illustration in the likeness of Led Zeppelin's Celebration Day poster by drawing parallels in its composition to my favorite spot for catching sunset along the Missouri River. There are also nods to the city's historic past and bright future, highlighting its early beginnings as a transportation hub and pulling color from the brands of our rising sports franchises. I even named the piece after one of the classic rock band's more bluesy tracks that seemed perfectly fitting.

Make it Kansas City

Since the poster composition was already established, most design decisions were made around the scenery. I wanted the city elements to be subtle and work just well enough together without overpowering one another. The color palette is a four-color scheme, which was inspired by all three major Kansas City sports teams.
